yes totaly. i played with a crapy amp the first 8 months i started playing. it did't even sound close to anything that you would hear in an album. as soon as i got a studio quality amp i began proggressing three times as fast. it just costs a lot of money. try to shoot for an amp with something close to what you would here on an album. cheap distortion WILL slow you down. i just used to pretend that it sounded good when i was playing with crap distortion
