Although $2000 is about right for hard drive recovery, it is usually used for pretty damaged hard drives. The hard drive was not at fault here. He is trying to send it off to a dust free room when it does not need to go there. That is a huge ripoff.

That's not the whole point, you have to be carefull about who you chose to repair your computer because the repair guys can easilly replace your components with inferior parts. On top of that, they may be trying to sell you parts you don't need or make repairs that aren't even necessary. BTW, I am interested in getting an engineering degree. Got any reccomendations on where to go?

Very true, but then again, he still completely misdiagnosed the problem. Yes, the visit to this special room would cost that much. However, many hard drives have some kind of safety mechanism to stop the read/write head from damaging the disk. Bessides, for a professional, it shouldn't be that hard to back up even a slightly damaged hard drive. Oh and another thing, it is highly unlikely for something to get into the hard drive (given the computer is used within normal environments).

Your point is good. A few comments just to better inform: 1st. The hard part is diagnosing the problem, not fixing it. Replacing RAM is easy. Figuring out the problem was the RAM is more difficult and admittedly not a first place to look as the failure rate of RAM is much less than Hard drives and power supplies (which bad RAM can be mistaken for bad power supply depending on your motherboard and how it gives errors).

2nd. When the man was talking about $2000 visit to "The Room" he was referring to the use of a clean room for data recovery. A hard drive is sealed up air tight so nothing gets inside... not even the tiniest spec of dust. This is because the read/write heads of the drive sit somewhere in the ballpark of 3 nanometers above the surface of the disk as it spins anywhere from 5400 to 15000 rpms (now a days).
