Back

ANCHOR: International day to support victims of torture in Kyiv did not go by unnoticed in. Numerous human rights activists and organizations went out on the streets of the city to show their attitude to torture in Ukraine and all over the world. Here's more from our correspondents. STORY: On the occasion of international Day Against Torture there was a round table held in Kyiv, where human rights activists and politicians of Ukraine gathered. They expressed worry over ongoing torture in Ukraine, and in particular, handling of jailed people, as well as illegal actions of police. However, this day did not stay behind inside the walls of office buildings. "Ukrainian Helsinki Union" came out to appeal in front of the office of Prosecutor General with banners asking to take strict measures and prevent use of torture in Ukraine. [Arkady Buschenko, Chair of Ukrainian Helsinki Union]: (male) "Although in the past year, and the year before that there have been a few cases of people accused for use of torture, but it is absolutely not corresponding to the scale of distribution of this shameful phenomenon. This is why we hope that our appeal will awaken the Prosecutor's office wo treat this problem more seriously". Adherents of Falun Gong in Ukraine came out to the central square of the country to appeal. They drew public's attention to the severe torture, perpetrated by the communist regime against their spiritual movement in China. [Alexandra Goncharenko, participant of the appeal]: (female) "Today is the International Day of Torture and Falun Gong practitioners here, in Kyiv, appeal to condemn the ongoing torture of Falun Gong practitioners in China. The torture and killing started in July of 1999, and are still happening." Few passers by remained indifferent to the topic of torture. Many signed the petition aimed at stopping the torture. As participants say, the signatures will be sent to the President and the government as well as to the UN representatives in the Ukraine. [Antonina, Koloimova, a passer-by]: (female) "I am very scared by the events in Tibet I particular, and by what Chinese government is doing to their own local population, as well as to Tibetans. I am against that". [Passer by]: (male) "We should give China some kind of support, if not material then at least moral, because the same kind of problems can start happening over here. After all, this looks like the Stalin persecution we experienced in the 1930s. This is persecution against people, who are completely innocent". It was reported earlier that according to Amnesty International, torture is being used against jailed prisoners in dozens of countries. In 2007 documented evidence was received from over 81 country.
