Just as a primer in case you didn't grow up in Colombia, Fernando Botero is an artist whose whole schtick is that he paints and sculpts a variety of fairly traditional subjects, but makes them all bulbous and fat. Sad-looking street buskers, half-dressed lovers, Roman gladiators, the Mona Lisa--all made doughy and ridiculous looking. He's basically the blue-dog guy of Colombia. Somehow though, presumeably for lack of a better serious painter, he's been elevated to the position of his country's Picasso and his goofy works are not only displayed with pride in and around his hometown of Medellin and drilled into the heads of schoolkids as the peak of Colombian art, but carted off to other parts of the world to showcase his quintessential "Colombianness." If you want an idea the kind of cultivated mind we're dealing with, his most recent work he's been humping around the globe is a 2005 series of torture victims meant to express his outrage and shock at the Abu Ghraib scandal a year earlier. You guessed it, they're all fat guys.
